CDF VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Teaching Program

Teaching at a Ugandan community school is an experience like no other. Although their lives have been harsh, the local children are extremely cheerful and friendly and will be eager to learn, as well as finding out more about you and where you come from. You will find that children are very polite and well behaved and friendly. Typical subjects taught include – English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and Physical Education. Your investment into the children's education will not only bring a smile to their faces, but will create a lasting constructive future for each child, their family and the society at large. Normal school hours are 8am–4pm.

Child Care Program (Orphanage)

The African child is in such a uniquely vulnerable position from which he or she cannot defend himself or herself in these circumstances endangering or threatening his/her welfare. In our current situations, a few societies provide any explicit recognition of children’s welfare. Tradition views of children as property of their parents still persist in many African societies and sometimes interference by the state on their behalf is construed as an intrusion on the rights of the parents.

The idea that children are God given gifts who also deserve respect, and that they have rights of their own, and that their interest may differ from those of their parents is difficult to accept. It is therefore in this view that the Covenant Development Foundation has been put in place as the children’s platform to voice out their views in matters affecting them. The foundation also acts as a channel in championing the children’s welfare.

The volunteer’s activities include, child care, teaching, playing with children, music, washing of children and feeding the children.

Women Empowernment Program

The lack of economic power of the local community, especially among women, is a major obstacle to long term development. Covenant Development Foundation (CDF) income generation programs provide women marketable skills and form a crucial part of promoting sustainable development in the area.

CDF seeks to address the needs of struggling single parent families and widows in Hoima village through the Women Empowerment Program (WEP). CDF assists widows and caregivers in developing practical skills concentrating in the production and sale of indigenous African crafts such as jewelry, baskets, and mats for profit. CDF’s goal is that each family generates a sustainable source of income that wholly supports their family and allows their children to remain in school. CDF provides equipment and materials to start these small businesses and facilitates in bringing the crafts to market.

Medical Program / HIV-AIDS Program

The Uganda Medical Volunteer Placement encompasses a number of fields and medical professionals and students are sorely needed. Our priority health program areas include HIV/AIDS, adolescent sexual reproductive health, and community health (mitigation of malaria and other diseases), building the capacity of rural communities in their efforts/initiatives towards improvement of sanitation and hygiene among others.
